About

Mission

A free, comprehensive and reliable german and serbian online dictionary for all users.

Vision

Extending technological and lexicographical know-how and developing applications and dictionaries for any language pair.

The Making

The author has started this project in 2012, using Microsoft Access - Database Management System.

In the first phase (2012-2015), headword tables for both languages were created. Selected morphological data were normalized in accordance with monolingual sources.

In the second phase (2015-2017), by comparing entries from bilingual and monolingual sources, over 100.000 relationships between headwords with identical/synonymous meaning were referenced.

In the third phase (2017- ) the creation of bilingual lexical units (senses) began. The systematization was conceived with the support of theoretical lexicographical sources and information from various dictionaries.

The database has been expanded to include relevant information for the lexical unit, such as domain, jargon, register, comparative syntax, examples etc.

More then 75.000 of unique bilingual syntagmas/sentences were created (representative material - mostly collocations identified in both languages) and then referenced in lexical units.

Over the years, the Style Guide (guidelines for lexicographers) has crystalized, providing consistency of dictionary entries.

Recently, the Access application was successfully migrated to a .net 8 MVC Web application.

Further development

The plan for the coming years for the german-serbian dictionary includes series of operations - sorting of examples, restructuring of lexical units, adding synonyms, etc.

Great importance will be attached to the feedback of users and language experts, so that corrections and improvements can be made.

As far as dictionary-making technology is concerned, the author is finalizing various applications (Microsoft .NET Framework), which enable teams of lexicographers to collaborate on monolingual or bilingual projects.
